How Much Does an HR Consultant Cost in Adelaide?

Adelaide HR consultant meeting with small business owner to discuss support options

Ask ten HR consultants what they charge and you'll get ten evasive answers. "It depends on your needs." "Let's have a chat about it." "Every business is different." That kind of vagueness is exactly why Adelaide business owners find it so hard to work out whether outside HR support is affordable, or whether they can put it off for another quarter.

We think that's the wrong way to talk about pricing. If you're weighing up whether to bring in an HR consultant, you deserve real numbers before you pick up the phone.

This post lays out what HR consulting actually costs in Adelaide in 2026, the different ways consultants charge, what drives price up or down, and what the value looks like against the alternative of doing nothing (or doing it all yourself).

The short answer

For most South Australian small to medium businesses (say, 5 to 50 staff), HR consulting works out to somewhere between the following ranges:

  • One-off project work: $1,500 to $8,000 depending on scope

  • Hourly or day-rate consulting: $180 to $350 per hour, or $1,400 to $2,500 per day

  • Ongoing retainer support: $600 to $3,500 per month depending on hours and scope

  • Fully outsourced HR (fractional HR manager): $3,000 to $8,000 per month

Those are honest, real-world numbers for the Adelaide market. Where you sit inside those ranges depends on the size of your business, the complexity of your workforce, and what you actually need help with.

What are you actually paying for?

Before we break down each pricing model, it helps to understand what an HR consultant does day to day. In Adelaide, that usually includes:

  • Drafting or reviewing employment contracts, position descriptions and workplace policies

  • Managing performance issues, disciplinary processes, and terminations legally and calmly

  • Handling complex or sensitive matters (grievances, bullying complaints, redundancies)

  • Award interpretation, Fair Work compliance, and wage reviews

  • Onboarding, offboarding, and workforce planning

  • Building HR systems that scale as the business grows

  • Training managers to handle everyday people issues themselves

The consultant's fee reflects the fact that a single wrong step in any of these areas can cost tens of thousands in Fair Work claims, unfair dismissal payouts, or lost staff. You're paying for judgement, experience, and risk reduction, not just time.

The four main pricing models

Here's how the pricing works in practice, with real ranges.

1. Fixed-fee project work

Best for: a single defined outcome, like updating your contracts or handling one performance issue.

Typical Adelaide pricing:

  • Contract or policy review and update: $1,500 to $3,500

  • Full HR document suite (contracts, handbook, policies, position descriptions): $3,500 to $8,000

  • Managing a performance improvement plan or termination: $1,800 to $4,500

  • Workplace investigation: $3,500 to $12,000 depending on complexity

You know the total cost upfront. Good for one-off needs where you don't want a bill that keeps climbing.

2. Hourly or day rates

Best for: ad hoc advice when things come up.

Typical Adelaide pricing:

  • Junior or generalist HR consultant: $150 to $220 per hour

  • Senior HR consultant: $220 to $350 per hour

  • Day rate (for on-site work): $1,400 to $2,500

Useful if you only need occasional help. Downside: hourly rates encourage you to avoid calling until things are already on fire, which is usually the most expensive time to get involved.

3. Monthly retainer

Best for: businesses that want proactive support and predictable costs.

Typical Adelaide pricing:

  • Light retainer (email/phone support, up to a few hours per month): $600 to $1,500 per month

  • Standard retainer (regular support plus some project work): $1,500 to $2,800 per month

  • Comprehensive retainer (heavy involvement, multiple contact people): $2,800 to $3,500+ per month

Retainers usually work out cheaper per hour than ad hoc work because you're guaranteeing volume. They also mean issues get raised earlier, before they become expensive problems.

4. Fractional HR manager

Best for: businesses too big for casual support but not big enough to justify a full-time HR manager.

Typical Adelaide pricing:

  • 1 to 2 days per week fractional HR: $3,000 to $6,000 per month

  • Broader outsourced HR function (people, culture, compliance, systems): $6,000 to $8,000+ per month

Compare this to a full-time HR manager salary in Adelaide (around $95,000 to $130,000 plus super, insurance and overheads) and the maths often stacks up.

What drives your price up or down?

Two businesses of similar size can pay very different prices for HR consulting. The main factors:

Business size and complexity. A 40-person manufacturer with a mixed EBA and Modern Award workforce needs more support than a 15-person tech company on a single award.

Current state of your HR. If your existing contracts, policies and records are in reasonable shape, ongoing support is cheaper. If everything needs rebuilding from scratch, the first 3 to 6 months will cost more.

Industry. Construction, mining, aged care and hospitality tend to have more complex award and safety obligations, which lifts the price.

Urgency. Emergency work (a disciplinary matter blowing up, a claim being lodged) usually costs more per hour than planned work.

Seniority of the consultant. A junior HR generalist charges less but may take longer or escalate to a senior for tricky calls. A senior consultant with 20 years of experience costs more but usually gets to the answer faster.

Location and delivery. Fully remote support is often cheaper than on-site. Adelaide-based consultants (like us) can offer both without interstate travel loading the invoice.

What about the "free" option?

Some business owners try to handle HR themselves, or lean on Fair Work's free resources.

Fair Work's website is genuinely useful. The Small Business Helpline is free. Templates are available. For very small businesses with straightforward workforces and no active issues, that might be enough for a while.

But here's what most Adelaide business owners don't factor in:

  • Your time has a cost. Every hour you spend drafting a policy is an hour you're not selling, delivering, or leading.

  • Templates aren't advice. They tell you what a standard contract looks like. They don't tell you whether it's the right one for your situation, or what you're legally required to include.

  • Free general information is not the same as specific guidance. Fair Work can't tell you whether a specific dismissal is going to be defensible if challenged. A consultant can.

  • The costs of getting it wrong are large. A single unfair dismissal claim can cost $30,000 to $60,000 in compensation, legal fees and time. That's before reputation damage.

The question is rarely "consultant vs no consultant." It's "consultant now, or consultant later when something's gone wrong."

Frequently asked questions

Is HR consulting tax deductible? For most Australian businesses, yes. HR consulting fees are typically a fully deductible business expense. Check with your accountant for your specific situation.

How quickly can I get help? For an established consultant, initial advice can usually be booked within a week. Urgent matters (a live disciplinary or termination) can often be triaged within 24 to 48 hours.

Do I need to sign a long contract? Not necessarily. Project work is one-off. Retainers usually have a 30 to 90 day notice period, which protects both sides but doesn't lock you in for years.

What's the difference between an HR consultant and an employment lawyer? Broadly: HR consultants help you build systems, prevent issues and handle day-to-day people management. Employment lawyers get involved when there's active legal exposure (claims, disputes, complex terminations). A good HR consultant will tell you when it's time to bring a lawyer in and won't try to over-service.

Can I trial a consultant before committing to a retainer? Yes. Most good consultants offer a free discovery call and are happy to do a small paid project first so you can assess the fit before locking in ongoing support.

How to work out what you actually need

Rough rule of thumb we use with new Adelaide clients:

  • Under 10 staff, straightforward workforce, no active issues: ad hoc or light retainer is usually fine

  • 10 to 30 staff, some complexity, occasional people issues: standard retainer makes sense

  • 30 to 80 staff, active hiring and management challenges: heavier retainer or fractional HR manager

  • 80+ staff: you're approaching the point where a full-time in-house HR manager, backed by external specialist support, is the better economic call

If you're not sure which bracket you're in, the honest answer is: a 20-minute call with someone experienced will tell you in about five minutes. That call should be free.
